Dentistry Done Differently

Gum disease is A mentally and physically debilitating condition, particularly when it progresses into periodontal disease (its advanced form).

Our periodontal treatment services can contribute to reversing symptoms of periodontal disease, and getting your smile and oral health back on track.

Periodontal treatment may involve a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing treatment such as:

  • Multiple routine professional cleaning of your teeth and gums.
  • A cleaning protocol called ‘root planing and debridement’ deals with plaque and tartar located underneath the gums.
  • Identifying gum recession and creating a plan to prevent its progression (we may refer patients for a gum graft if the recession is severe).
  • Advising you on your risk factors for periodontal disease/advice on altering your diet and routine habits that could be harming your gums.

Choosing to go ahead with your dentist’s recommended course of periodontal treatment will not only stop periodontal disease from worsening, but it can also benefit your overall health. Periodontal disease is clinically proven to cause heart disease and Alzheimer’s, which can occur when plaque erodes the gumline and enters the bloodstream.

As well as causing unpleasant physical symptoms and increasing the risk of serious chronic conditions, periodontal disease can alter your facial appearance in several ways including:

  • Gum recession: causes teeth to appear larger in length, affecting your gum-to-tooth and tooth width and length ratio.
  • Jawbone recession: periodontal disease causes jawbone erosion, resulting in an angular-looking lower face region.
  • Staining: thick plaque and tartar staining darken your teeth, covering the white youthful-looking shade associated with healthy teeth.

We use the least invasive techniques possible to stabilise and improve your periodontal health. Our personable clinicians see it as their mission not just to treat you, but to help you make sure you don’t have to return for repeated future periodontal procedures.

Using state-of-the-art photography and workflows, we can give you a clear and comprehensive overview of where your periodontal health is now, and how we can work towards a healthier mouth and smile.

Reducing our impact on the environment

At St Mawes Dental, we believe we can work together to preserve the resources of the planet, use products and materials which respect the environment and contribute to environmental protection above and beyond our operation.

TOXIN REDUCTION

We aim to be an ‘amalgam-free’ practice and are committed to lower the environmental impact from the use of industrial mercury, which is a constituent of dental amalgam fillings.

SAFE USE & DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS

We have special equipment such as safe filters in our suction and waste pipes to minimise our patient’s exposure to mercury when old dental metal fillings have to be taken out.

ENERGY CONSERVATION

In every area of our practice we have embraced the latest technology and installed the latest heating, insulation and energy recycling processes to significantly lower the energy consumption of the practice.
